It’s been four long years since Jessy Lanza’s last studio album. She has remained relatively quiet since then, filling in occasional features and DJ spots along the way. With the dawn of this new decade, the promise of new music has fans excited for another dose of the Canadian’s infectious alternative RnB/electro pop. After winning over audiences in Prague supporting Caribou in 2014, Lanza will return to iconic venue Meetfactory for her own headliner concert in March.
Exploiting the intersection of traditional dance music with progressive electronics, Lanza explores divergent fields of pop and electronica with understated confidence. Her debut record Pull My Hair Back (2013) was critically acclaimed and saw her become a key figure in the avant-garde electro-pop movement of the 2010s. It was also shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris music prize in 2014.
Her sophomore record Oh No (2016) further solidified that reputation, drawing on classic electronica to create something new – emotional, cerebral and danceable all at once.
She explained, “I always have a mix of all the pop of the past 40 years in my music when I create my music”.
Her insightful lyrics also resonate with contemporary audiences dealing with the struggles of everyday anxiety and stress. Oh No was again nominated for the Polaris music prize, and was included in the Top 10 Dance & Electronic Albums of 2016 by the Canadian music monthly Exclaim!
Lanza has since been involved in smaller projects, including continuing work with Hyperdub Records and more recently a release with New Jersey artist The Galleria. Her new solo music (as yet unnamed) promises to be a highlight on 2020’s music release calendar.
