In defying the laws of tradition, Los Angeles based music producer MONO/POLY (born Charles Dickerson) has managed to outstrip the logics of multi-genre producing. Known for his distinct madness of face melting bass, paired with his dreamy astral soundscapes of glitch-based hip-hop, MONO/POLY has proved himself to be a natural phenomenon. Catch him playing in the Nu Spirit Club this Thursday, May 19, at the Insomnia party with Jimmy Pé and D OneTwo!

You are on tour right now. How is it going so far and do you find all the travelling and meeting new people inspiring? What do you like on tour in general?

The tour has been great and i’m only 3 gigs in! Yes, the touring and meeting people has been inspirational, it’s always been inspirational for me to see new people and their perspectives. The thing I like on tour in general is that I get to learn more about the world and how other people live.

You are playing in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Do you know some music producers from here or around Central Europe?

I’m not sure if I know any from this area or at least I can’t think of any at the moment.

I think, for me, your music has a certain aggressive or very energetic feel. Is it something you want to achieve? What emotions are you trying to bring into your music?

Yeah, much of it is energetic or aggressive because I enjoy music that uplifts me in a way, but some of my music isn’t aggressive. Sometimes I listen to pure tones and tibetan bowls so not all of my music will be so energetic or aggressive.

I know you’ve been collaborating with the names of LA beat scene, such as Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Thundercat and many others. What is your opinion on current scene there? What place do you find the most inspiring for your work?

LA is awesome and I still love it but right now I think the international beat scene, like the music being played on Noisia Radio is exciting. I’m in Rotterdam, Netherlands right now and I feel like this place is going to have an inspirational impact on my music as well, it’s been one of the best cities I’ve been to in the world.

Your last album Golden Skies was released two years ago. Are you working on a new musical project?

Yes, i’m working on some new musical projects right now ;). Expect more collaborations…

We can say your music is generally very rich electronic beats and melodies. Are other music genres important for you? What other music do you listen to?

I listen to a lot of genres of music but I feel like listening to jazz fusion has influenced the richness of my music the most.

Where you want to go in a musical way in the future? Have you got some particular goal, you want to achieve?

More funk, more drum & bass, more dance, more just about everything you can imagine, I’m all inclusive.
