Nemo is the moniker of composer and singer Emma Louise Ottsen Knudsen. For many years, she has shared her dreamy, quirky DIY style through her personal take on music in Copenhagen’s underground scene. In her late teens, she was a front singer in the punk band Pogo Polis and later on in the power trio Jenny who received impressive attention from the media and got nominated for song of the year by the Danish Critic’s prize, Steppeulven.

Her current musical outlet is Nemo and her two released singles of 2023 have already reached the national radio in Denmark and been featured in several online media outlets, where mentioned in 10 best songs of the week by the acknowledged online magazine Soundvenue. The forthcoming single „Ocean“, is a deeper dive into her peculiar electronic world, a snippet of what to expect from her debut album Blue is the Colour of Infinity this spring.

On November 29th Rhizome is releasing Nemo’s single „Ocean“, a song about sensing the subtle signs and mysteries that nature provides, in order to tune in on one’s intuition. In this story, the narrator is confronted with a person who tries to mislead her. Ignoring the small signs that nature offers, she feels lost until she reaches the shore. As she spends time with the depths of the ocean, her barriers soften and she becomes able to see things more clearly. Eventually, she chooses to join the body of water, instead of letting fear control her path. Cyclically, the track unfolds with Nemo’s angelic voice, dusky guitars, watery soundscapes and a minimalistic beat. Her background in punk and fascination of electronics merge in a distinctly dreamy universe, where mysteries are explored, and oceans evoke powerful feelings.

„In me everything is already flowing.“ – Luce Irigaray

„Ocean“ draws inspiration from hydrofeminism. A branch of feminism centering on water and how we are related through fluids all the time. As Astrida Neimanis writes in her text ‘Hydrofeminism: Or, On Becoming a Body of Water: “As watery, we experience ourselves less as isolated entities, and more as oceanic eddies”. Her song depicts Nemo’s hesitant acceptance of herself as part of a larger body of water, a theme explored further on her forthcoming album. With her playful songwriting, Nemo draws on oceanic existence, the mysterious nature, and togetherness in her own unique musical universe.

Nemo will release on the label Rhizome, a Copenhagen-based label co-founded by Aria Leth Schütze and Mads Krue Bugge in 2020. Rhizome is dedicated to experimental music and alternative release formats, with a focus on the Copenhagen underground scene, and has amongst numerous releases presented the compilation albums bag/belly/box and Hypersea.
