Wedding might have just figured out the perfect formula for festival music. Drums and pure rhythm is a soul of their new EP called Jobseeker. Don’t you believe me? Check out their videos from the Roskilde show. The 3-man band (Kristian Alexander Pedersen, Kristoffer Bech, Hasse Bruun Guiseppi) can create the atmosphere of a huge rave. After their debut (Sunshower) the trio moved from foggy, hypnotic, reverb-like, nonchalant 80’s vibe to a more straightforward sound. Jobseeker is brighter and faster from the last project. But on the other hand, their music still resembles the heavy emotional atmosphere of the Copenhagen indie scene.

Reporters from the Danish music webmagazine Passive/Agressive described seeing the band live: “Both times it was remarkable how much movement Wedding creates in the audience. They seem to hit a vein in something that has been missed, or maybe it’s a new thing. As a live band, Wedding delivers a club feel that is wild, dark, familiar, and completely new. The visual experience of seeing a skilled drummer like Hasse Bruun play break beats undeniably gives the music experience a different physicality and immediacy than if you were turning knobs.”

The drums on “Cake” [00:29] remind me of a saturated “Perfect Drug” song by Nine Inch Nails, which was used in a soundtrack for David Lynch’s Lost Highway. We can definitely hear the inspiration from the jungle and rave traditions, which is an interesting combination for them. The trio makes it hard for the listener to distinguish whether this is electronic music or live instruments. Echoey synths and vocal samples just help in creating an overall trance atmosphere.

Jobseeker reminds me of the energy of the 90s acts like Orbital and Underworld, or maybe even some “minimal” parts of old The Prodigy (for example “No Good (Start The Dance)”. It is this euphoric “marriage” between live concert and club rave that makes Wedding’s specific trademark.

All three members come from different musical and artistic backgrounds, bringing distinct perspectives into the band’s creative process. In their music, they are combining the introverted and the extroverted, the reflective and the physical. And it’s fun to hear the middle ground, where they meet. Wedding continues in the Danish or Nordic tradition of blending “cold” electronic music with emotional, melancholic songwriting. The echoey synths and chopped vocal samples create a „hauntological” vibe. Sometimes they sound like a memory of a rave from 30 years ago, filtered through modern speakers.

When “Taxa Blade” starts with punchy drums, you can immediately imagine a car chase scene through neon-lit night streets. This would be a perfect soundtrack for a car game as well. Need for Speed Copenhagen edition.

Two released projects and are already proving themselves at Roskilde festival, just in two years; we can only look forward to seeing more success from Wedding. I can see bright days for these three Danish musicians.
