We were approached by our friends, Hungarian music collective and label Marmint Agency, which we like very much. Kelenföld XP is a young producer based in Budapest. For a debut project, his sound and overall composition sound really complex. We hope you enjoy his track „Kids“ below:
„The main purpose of this 4-song EP is to summarize the lessons and thoughts I’ve gathered during my travels, moves and experiences over the past few years. During these, I mostly listened to IDM, experimental and EDM so something like this came out at the end.“ – Kelenföld XP
Budapest-Kelenföld is a train station. Why did you name this EP, does it have some special meaning for you?
Budapest-Kelenföld is a very big station, with a lot of trains, but also has a lot of buses and trams. At the same time, it’s also quite a big neighborhood, which is beautiful, exciting, and very diverse. There are suburban parts, and one corner is part of the city center next to the Danube, with nice big houses, clubs, and galleries, but a very large part of the ‘borough’ is Soviet-style blocks as far as you can see.
I was born and still live in this neighborhood, but as a child, we moved to the agglomeration of Budapest and I grew up there. So on the way home, I always had to wait a long time for the bus that took me from the station to home, so I spent half my life standing at the Kelenföld station, waiting and staring bored at the blocks. I also really like trains. The name came to me randomly, when I was going home trying to figure out what my name would be, and I saw a street sign that said Kelenföld.
This is your debut EP, but the sound and composition sound really mature, and skilled. How long are you dedicating to music production? Are you self-taught or did you have some musical mentors?
I think I first used a DAW in about 2015, but I’ve only been doing it seriously for a couple of years. When I was living abroad a few years ago and I was unemployed and bored, I had a lot of free time and that’s when I got into it more. All my knowledge is from YouTube and the internet, I didn’t go to music schools or anything like that. The only person I learned from and who helped me with this album and mastered it was Fausto Mercier.
Is there some specific atmosphere or emotion, you wanted to convey with this EP?
I don’t know, maybe waiting for a bus at a train station and listening to the trains. Peak Central/Eastern Europe moments.
Do you have some music, visual arts or film inspirations? Something very close to you… maybe some artists, that motivate you?
Fast and Furious movies, Formula 1 and Skins. Not too many artists tbh. I’m a bit inspired by the world of Crystal Castles and Bonobo, and sometimes my friends‘ music. Also by internet-based subgenres, Chicago footwork, IDM, and stuff like that. And of course Avicii.
