Mode Collapse (not the term from machine learning) is the artistic name of a man called Uasmi Nasser, who is a London-based music artist. He reached out to Swine Daily with his upcoming EP SKOOFISM that will be released on January 15th, 2026. There was no artwork in the email, no photo, so I had to click to see more. I went straight to the SoundCloud link and listened to the whole EP, which is 4 tracks long and has suitable artwork. It’s a good photograph of a man with the strange black mask, wearing a grey suit, holding an old office phone with the cable. The background is a green garage.
From the start, the music evokes the experimental hip-hop spirit of clipping. or Daedelus, or perhaps JPEGmafia. It’s a broken hip-hop with heavyweight beats and analog synths‘ rawness. Mode Collaps also modulates his voice; sometimes it’s pitched down, sometimes pitched up, like Quasimoto (Madlib). This modulated voice just goes better with the beat than a natural voice. The crawling flow is perfect for the theme of the lyrics.
The name of the song SKOOFISM refers to „SKOOF,“ which is apparently a slang term for a 30-50-year-old „nasty man looking older than he actually is, due to bad physical condition, obesity, baldness, smoking, bad job, ugly wife, and three kids, etc,“ according to the Urban Dictionary. The artist explains more in the e-mail: „It’s a man in his 40s, who appears unkempt, typically works in low-paying, dead-end jobs, and spends virtually all of their free time drinking beer while browsing the Internet. The music on these tracks explores the themes of existential meaning of life, biased expectations, and the modern capitalistic world through a mix of conscious and ironic lyrics.“

I recommend checking out SKOOFISM and Mode Collapse to everybody who likes experimental hip-hop, spiced with analog electronic sounds, energetic but dark atmosphere, and likes artists like Sleaford Mods, clipping., Ho99o9, Dry Cleaning, Bob Vylan, or Viagra Boys.
