We wrote about multitalented artist dvdv, which works with graphics, visual art, new media art, and music when she released a wonderful album What is the opposite of ambivalence in 2001. We made an interview on this occasion. I was immediately drawn to the artist’s magical world, which she created using deeply layered vocals, abstract ambient sounds and innovative beats. We also wrote about Aid Kid’s remix of dvdv’s song „00023 ghosts“ here.

Now we have the pleasure of premiering an alternative version of „Your Lesson“ song. Feel free to get immersed in dvdv’s imaginative music and you can read more about her process below ⤵

„The song is almost a warning to oneself, that if you try to take it all, you might take your own life with it. It’s the lesson you have to learn. That being alone and just one individual is an illusion of the systematically trained ego. And if we do not take care of each other, we will generate systems, that will just take care of oneself but not us humans nor of our communities: It will rip us apart, just like we ripped others apart on the way.“

„I never wanted to release this track on the album, to be honest, I asked Poly Armour many times if we could remove the track from the album, and he always said no and that he really liked it. We decided to keep it. While my best friend Mohamed (Gold Plates) was mastering the tracks of the album, watching me struggling to finish all the fine-tuning of the mixes, he suddenly mentioned: „Yo, so I think Your Lesson is actually amazing, the only thing that really really sucks is the bassline.“ Lol, I was so grateful for this feedback, because I knew something was off, but I just couldn’t figure out that it was the bassline. Call it subjective blindness. I asked him if he had any suggestions on what to do, and he started playing around with basslines on the videocall. A few of them really inspired me and made me want to try it out, too. After some time he kinda got distracted and made a whole new track out of Your Lesson and just was in his zone making new music. I muted the videocall and started to build my own bassline, inspired by Gold Plates‘ words. Suddenly, this track finally felt complete and powerful. That is why it is now called „Your Lesson (Alternative)“

dvdv told us via e-mail, that she was also inspired by the powerful energy of her artist friend Dmitrievna, who „can create these amazing spaces of abyss with her voice and production“. The heavily voided atmosphere by Crystal Castles was also something where the artist found inspiration. „It was a lovely and fun little experiment, and it most probably stays an exception. Big shoutout to the producer Poly Armour, who has been behind most of the beat production on the album <3″

Important note: dvdv’s album STARVVING was supported by Initiative Musik gGmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. Additional support by Musikfonds e.V. This album would have not been possible without the help of these organizations.
